Veterans have what it takes
to make great franchisees!

"Veterans have the ideal traits to become successful franchise owners," says Michael Newman, founder and CEO of Always Best Care Senior Services. "And we're looking for veterans to become Always Best Care business owners."

As reported in Franchising USA, one out of every seven franchise businesses are owned and operated by veterans of the US military, according to a recent study conducted for the International Franchise Association Educational Foundation based on US Census data. More than 66,000 veteran-owned franchise businesses in the United States provide jobs directly for 815,000 Americans, and generate more than $41 billion in GDP.

Why are veterans successful in franchising?

  • The International Franchise Association says veterans come back with strong leadership skills and a thorough understanding of teams.   • Franchises run on systems. Implementing systems and following procedures with precision, emphasized in military training, leads to success in franchising.
  • Franchises provide training. Veterans are trained and taught very specific skills to be used to carry out very specific tasks. Franchises have comprehensive training and support built into their opportunities. This means a veteran can enter into a completely new field, follow the franchisor's proven business model, and receive the training, guidance, and support a new business owner needs to succeed.
  • Franchises offer support. In franchising, you're in business "for" yourself, but not "by" yourself.

Another essential characteristic of a successful franchise operation, according to Franchising USA, is a business methodology that can get a franchise launched in a short period of time; supports the franchisee with built-in networks that can include suppliers, advisors, and other franchisees; and provides pre-established guidelines for the back-office procedures usually the most challenging part of starting a business for most people. To make a franchise system flourish, a good franchisor painstakingly researches and tests all elements of its methodology and documents them in their Standard Operating Procedures.

"All this will seem familiar to veterans," explained Mr. Newman. "They have the leadership skills and get-it-done attitude that we're looking for in our franchisees." No franchise company can guarantee the business will not have its hiccups. Franchising USA says that's where character traits developed and reinforced in the military come into play. Those include an ability to "improvise, adapt, and overcome" (an unofficial mantra of the Marine Corps) and not let setbacks deflect their focus on the mission.
